[1] This is a literal translation of an idiomatic phrase -- 一か八か -- that means going all-in on something that's up to chance.
[2] This entire half-verse is referencing Akutagawa Ryuunosuke's "Spider's Thread".
In it, a murderer and thief named Kandata who is damned to Hell in the afterlife. The Lord Buddha sees him one day and recalls Kandata's past kindness in not killing a spider, so decides to offer him a chance at salvation. He dangles a spider's thread down into the pit of Hell for Kandata to climb up and out of it with. However, while Kandata is climbing, he notices that other sinners are climbing up with him and dragging the thread down. He starts thrashing and kicking the other sinners down, and that's what causes the thread to snap, plunging him and the rest down back into Hell. This is meant to be a cautionary parable against selfishness, and the self sabotage of kicking down others when you, yourself, are extended aid. However, the line reframes this as a positive-- here, Kandata is an example of the sort of ruthless, self-serving ambition that one needs in order to grasp success in RTL. Especially in this losers bracket, if you aren't willing to damn your competitors in order to climb your way out of hell, then in Shura's view, you lack the right to perform in the first place [s/o to Carp for writing this extremely good translators note]
